euandi, a new free-of-charge Voting Advice Application (VAA) helps citizens make informed choices in their 2014 European Parliament (EP) vote. Available in 24 languages, the app invites users to react to 28 policy statements covering a wide range of contemporary policy issues and political values in European politics, as well as two policy statements specific to the user’s national political context.

euandi has been developed by the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and implemented in Luxembourg by the team of political scientists of the University of Luxembourg, Dr Raphael Kies, Dr Philippe Poirier and Dr Patrick Dumont

Not only does the tool help people identify which political parties represent their views, but it also provides an innovative platform for community building, where people from all over Europe can connect with each other based on their political views.

In addition, euandi will also be one of the largest public opinion measurement tools ever built. With the aim of attracting over 10 million users across Europe, it will result into the largest academic set of data available on public opinion in Europe.

The tool’s strong scientific background and its innovative social features make it interesting not only to the general public, but also to academics, experts and policy makers.

Voting advice

Over 250 political parties running in the EP elections have been profiled for the euandi tool. Parties were given the opportunity to "self-place" themselves on the same 30 statements presented to users, and highly-trained country experts subsequently validated and documented their positions. The records of the data furnished by parties, as well as extracts from party documents, are easily accessible to users.

After having completed the questionnaire, euandi will compare your views with that of each party and will display the results in a set of customizable visualizations, fully compatible with all mobile devices.

A European political space

euandi’s most revolutionary feature lies in the opportunity for users to match their views not only with those of the parties, but also with those of fellow users on a local, regional, national and even European level. Its unique feature allowing users to connect with each other has never been attempted in any other voting advice application.

euandi will compare the user’s position with those of other respondents and will display where other like-minded euandi users are located. An interactive map, called “My political Europe” will clearly demonstrate which city, region or country is politically most attractive to them.

Respondents also may use social-media linked applications such as Facebook and Twitter to connect to other respondents with similar political preferences, and users will be able to create or join online communities.

euandi will therefore become a transnational match-maker, where users can “like” and connect to each other based on their personal political views. euandi will help citizens to become politically active by giving them the possibility to establish communities of similar political contours based on the euandi statements.
